District of Hermagor

The district on the north side of the Karawanken consists of the natural Lesachtal, the Gailtal and the Gitschtal. The natural scenery naturally provides the basis for tourism and the timber industry. The urban centers are Hermagor and Kötschach-Mauthen.

hermagor

The city has about 7000 inhabitants and is located on the Pressegger See. In recent years, the municipality has developed into one of the most important tourist regions with more than one season in Carinthia and offers everything your heart desires all year round. From the slow trail around the lake to the sunrise hike to the Gartnerkofel, countless hiking and mountain bike routes, including cross-border ones, and a lake. Due to the strong tourism, handicrafts and trade are still alive here.

The Gail Valley

The Gailtal runs from Kötschach to Villach and has its special appeal due to the contrast of the soft valley with the rugged mountains of the Karawanken and Carnic Alps in the south.

Culturally, the Gailtal is characterized by many traditions such as the "Kufenstechen" and the famous Gailtal traditional costume. There is also a Carinthian lake with the Pressegger See and one of the most beautiful ski areas in Austria with the Nassfeld.

This region is characterized by extreme snow security and many sunny days. Hikers will enjoy the Karnische Höhenweg and other fantastic destinations. The cultural center is Nötsch with the well-known "Nötscher Kreis".

The Lesachtal

The Lesachtal lies between Lienz and Kötschach and is considered the most natural valley in Europe. The high valley lies between 800 and 1200 m, is very sparsely populated and has an inexplicable magic.

Here you really live in and with nature. Own food production and sustainable living are very important here. Here you can enjoy the mountains and slopes of the valley in both winter and summer.

The main towns are Maria Luggau, St. Lorenzen and Liesing.

The Gitschtal

The Gitschtal is a valley floor that connects the Gailtal with the Weissensee and subsequently with the Drautal.

The mining region became a tourist destination with the main town Weißbriach, which is a very nice family ski area.

Hikers looking for peace and passionate cross-country skiers will feel at home here.
